Club Quest

Every summer, a group of volunteers from Vancouver Church of Christ and other churches throughout the Northwest gathers in northern Mexico to build houses for needy families. In 2006, about 100 people gathered and built 4 houses from the ground up.

The idea was borrowed from a group in southern California that called itself Club Dust ; In 1999, Club Rust, a Seattle-based counterpart to Club Dust emerged. Several members of our congregation helped those two groups. By 2002, so many of our members were involved that we were doing projects on our own.

84 from Vancouver, South Carolina and a couple other places convened in Tecate, Mexico in 2003. They built 4 houses and gained the confidence to form their own group. 2003 is the year Club Quest was born!

Beginning in 2004, Club Quest made another change – they began working hand-in-hand with a church in the little town of Zorrillo, just south of Ensenada in Baja California.  This is something that many Club Quest members had been praying and dreaming about for some time.  Now, they are not only building homes for families, which alone is a wonderful thing, but they are also building relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ.  They have built four homes every year while in Zorrillo.  A friend in Zorrillo, Benjamin, has taken on the task of ensuring the pads are well built.  The group camps at a nearby ocean-side campground and every year so far, has invited the entire Zorrillo congregation (and perhaps a few more) out for a fiesta – an incredible time of food, playing on the beach (some of the hearty children even go in the ocean), crafts and wonderful fellowship.  The evening ends with a time of praise songs and prayer.

2006 marks the tenth mission trip since our first participant traveled south in 1997.  25 homes have been built with the help of the Vancouver Church of Christ.  All of the praise goes to Jesus Christ, who leads us by His example.  He is the greatest servant of all time.  In the words of our brother, Hector, who is so passionate about this work, "Thank you Jesus!"

Throughout the year, Club Quest promotes several fund-raising efforts to pay for construction materials. Last year, these included selling Scrip (contact Laurie Clark), the Pumpkin Patch (contact Bonnie Miller), and the Men in White Auction. Contact Bonnie Miller and Joanne Roberts if you'd like to be involved in Mexico house building in July.
